Preparing for Life with a Prosthesis

Going through an amputation can be one of the most emotionally and physically devastating events for any person. It is life altering and never an easy situation to overcome. Not only is amputation a significant physical loss, it can also be mentally difficult to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Preparing for Life after an amputation can be very challenging, but we are here to help. There are many changes to be made, both for you, and for your family. The rehabilitation process will take time, but many amputees are eventually able to get back to a relatively normal routine within a reasonable time frame.

Depending on the level of your amputation, the rehabilitation process and the prosthesis can be quite different. Know that every individual is different, and your process might vary from others in a similar situation. That is why we are going to be with you throughout your journey back to living a healthy and active life!

Let’s Work Together

At Prosthetics Clinic of Florida, we work with both upper extremity and lower extremity amputees. The first step to getting your prosthesis is meeting with your Patient Advocate (PA). The PA will be your main point of contact throughout the process and even after you receive your prosthesis. Following the meeting with the PA, your prosthetist will conduct an initial evaluation to assess your prosthetic needs and create a treatment plan. Your prosthetist will work closely with your physicians to obtain the required documentation so that we can provide you with the prosthesis that best meets your needs. At your next appointment, your prosthetist will take a cast and/or measurements of your limb and start the process of creating your socket. The next step is a diagnostic fitting so that the prosthetist can evaluate the fit of the socket. Once we receive insurance authorization and diagnostic fittings are satisfactory, we can proceed to fabrication of your definitive prosthesis. At the Delivery appointment, your prosthetist will fit you with your prosthesis and provide you with a detailed overview on how your prosthesis works.

Follow-up care is key and it is one of Prosthetics Clinic of Florida values. Approximately two weeks after you receive your prosthesis, you will have another appointment with your prosthetist. Your PA will also periodically follow up with you to see how you are doing. If, at any point, you need additional appointments, please contact your PA.
